Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free tool that puts your business on Google Maps and local search results. For any Kerala business — whether you’re in Kozhikode, Kochi, Kannur, or a small town — it’s the single most impactful free marketing tool available.

This is the complete setup guide, step by step.

What is Google Business Profile?

When someone searches “restaurants near me” or “web designers in Calicut,” Google shows a map with three business listings beneath it. This is called the Local 3-Pack — and it gets more clicks than regular search results.

Your Google Business Profile controls how your business appears in:

  • Google Maps
  • Local 3-Pack search results
  • Google Knowledge Panel (right side when someone searches your exact business name)
  • Google Reviews

Step 1: Create Your Google Business Profile

  1. Go to business.google.com
  2. Sign in with your Google account (use your business Gmail)
  3. Click “Manage now” or “Add your business”
  4. Enter your business name exactly as it appears in real life

Step 2: Choose the Right Category

This is critical. Your primary category tells Google what your business does.

Examples for Kerala businesses:

  • Restaurant → “Restaurant” or “Kerala Restaurant”
  • Hospital → “General Hospital” or “Medical Clinic”
  • Web designer → “Website Designer”
  • Real estate → “Real Estate Agency”
  • Travel → “Travel Agency”

You can add secondary categories too — add all that apply.

Step 3: Add Your Location

If you have a physical shop or office, add your exact address. For businesses in Calicut, include:

  • Door number
  • Street name
  • Area (Cherooty Nagar, Palayam, Mavoor Road, etc.)
  • City: Kozhikode
  • State: Kerala
  • PIN code

Important: This address must match exactly what’s on your website.

Step 4: Add Your Service Area (For Service Businesses)

If you go to customers (plumber, web designer, caterer), you can add a service area instead of or in addition to your address.

Add all districts you serve: Kozhikode, Kannur, Malappuram, Wayanad, etc.

Step 5: Add Contact Information

  • Phone: Add your primary number. A local landline (0495-XXXXXXX) in addition to mobile looks more professional.
  • Website: Add your website URL. If you don’t have one, contact us — this is exactly why a website matters.

Step 6: Verify Your Business

Google will verify your listing through:

  • Postcard — a card sent to your address with a PIN code (takes 5–7 days)
  • Phone call or video call — for some business types
  • Instant verification — if you already have a Google Search Console account linked to your domain

Complete verification before doing anything else. Unverified listings have limited features.

Step 7: Complete Every Section

After verification, fill in every field:

Business Hours Add accurate opening hours including Sundays and public holidays. Update for Onam, Eid, and other Kerala festivals.

Photos Upload at least 10 photos:

  • Exterior photo (so customers recognize your location)
  • Interior photo
  • Team photo
  • Products or services photos
  • Logo

Businesses with photos get 7x more enquiries.

Description Write a 750-character description with your main keywords. Example for a Calicut restaurant:

“XYZ Restaurant serves authentic Kerala cuisine in Kozhikode since 2010. Located near Mananchira Square, we offer biriyani, seafood, and traditional Malabar dishes. Open daily 7am–11pm. Dine-in, takeaway, and home delivery available.”

Services Add every service you offer with a brief description and price range.

Products (if applicable) Add your main products with photos and prices.

Step 8: Get Reviews

Reviews are the #1 factor for ranking in the local 3-pack.

How to get your first 10 reviews fast:

  1. Ask 10 regular customers personally — most people are happy to help
  2. Create a short link to your review page and share on WhatsApp status
  3. Print a QR code and put it at your counter or on your business card

Respond to every review — positive and negative. This shows Google you’re active.

Step 9: Post Regularly

GBP Posts appear in your listing and keep your profile active:

  • Offers — special discounts or deals
  • Updates — new services, new staff, new location
  • Events — if you host events

Post at least once per week for the best results.

What Comes After GBP?

GBP alone gets you on the map. To dominate Calicut local search, you also need:

  1. A professional website with local SEO
  2. Consistent citations on JustDial, Sulekha, and other directories
  3. A review generation strategy
  4. Regular content on your website
