Website Redesign Checklist for Kerala Businesses — Don't Skip These Steps
By Calicut Web Designers · 5 August 2025
A website redesign is exciting — new design, better performance, more leads. But done wrong, it can destroy years of SEO work and break existing customer links to your pages.
This checklist is for businesses in Kerala planning a website redesign in 2025.
Before You Start: Audit Your Current Website
1. List All Your Current URLs
Export a complete list of every page on your current website. Use:
- Your sitemap (yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml)
- Google Search Console (which pages get traffic)
- A free crawl tool like Screaming Frog
Every URL that gets traffic needs to either be kept or properly redirected.
2. Check Google Search Console Data
Before killing your old site, download:
- Top performing pages by clicks
- Keywords each page ranks for
- Pages with indexed content in Google
You need this to protect your rankings during the redesign.
3. Backup Everything
Full backup of:
- Website files
- Database
- Images
- Emails (if hosted on same server)
4. Note Your Current Google Analytics Baseline
Screenshot your current traffic stats. After launch, you need to compare against these numbers to know if the redesign hurt or helped.
During the Redesign
5. Keep the Same URLs Where Possible
If /services/web-design currently ranks for “web design in Calicut,” keep that URL in the new website. Changing URLs breaks all existing Google rankings and external links.
6. Build a 301 Redirect Map
For URLs that must change, create a spreadsheet:
| Old URL | New URL |
|---|---|
| /about-us | /about |
| /web-design-services | /services/web-design |
Every redirect must be in place on launch day.
7. Migrate All Content — Don’t Rewrite Everything
Your existing content has ranking power. Don’t delete or completely rewrite pages that rank well. Refresh and improve them, but keep the core content intact.
8. SEO Elements Must Transfer
For every page:
- Title tag (don’t copy exact — improve it)
- Meta description
- H1 heading
- Image alt texts
- Internal links
9. Test on a Staging Site
Build the new website on a test URL (not your live domain) before launch. Test:
- Every page loads correctly
- All forms submit successfully
- Mobile layout on multiple devices
- All internal links work
- All images display
10. Don’t Launch on a Friday
Seriously. Launch Monday or Tuesday so your team has a full working week to fix any issues that arise. Websites often have small problems on launch day — you want to be available and fresh to fix them.
On Launch Day
11. Update Google Search Console
Add the new website’s sitemap to Google Search Console:
yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml
If you changed your domain, use the “Change of Address” tool in Search Console.
12. Verify All Redirects Are Working
Test each redirect from your map. A broken redirect returns a 404 error — which kills the ranking.
13. Re-verify Analytics
Make sure Google Analytics tracking code is on the new site. Without it, you’re flying blind.
14. Test All Forms and WhatsApp Buttons
Every contact form, enquiry form, and WhatsApp button should be tested on the live website immediately after launch.
15. Check Page Speed on Live Site
Run your new live site through PageSpeed Insights. Sometimes hosting differences cause speed issues that didn’t appear on staging.
After Launch
16. Monitor Google Search Console for Errors
Within 1–2 weeks, Google will recrawl your site. Check Search Console for:
- 404 errors (pages Google is trying to reach that don’t exist)
- Coverage issues
- Mobile usability problems
17. Watch Your Rankings for 30 Days
A slight temporary dip in rankings after a redesign is normal. But if specific pages drop significantly and don’t recover within 4 weeks, investigate — likely a missing redirect or content issue.
18. Announce the New Website
- Post on Facebook and Instagram
- Send a WhatsApp broadcast to your customers
- Update your Google Business Profile with new photos of the new site
